A Place for the Plate

Niall Rowan is Head of the Testing Division of Warrington Fire Research Centre and has been involved in research on the plate thermometer and the harmonisation of fire resistance testing in Europe for several years. Fire resistance test methods developed in CEN TC 127 have recently been agreed as European Standards (EN’s).
This confirms the adoption of the ‘plate’ as the means of controlling the temperature rise in the furnace for all future fire resistance testing throughout Europe, a decision not without some controversy.
