The test ascertains the time taken for a material to ignite when its surface is subjected to radiated heat at one of five levels, and when there is a small flame present to cause ignition of any volatile gases given off from the surface. The ease with which a material ignites is obviously an important consideration in any assessment of fire hazard. It is designed primarily for the testing of building materials and composites, but it can be used for other materials as well.
